Maintain Your Digestive Health While Traveling

The summer travel season is fast approaching. As much as we look forward to those summer vacations, they can have an impact on our and our family's digestive health. Many people report that their digestion seems to be disrupted when they travel, resulting in occasional irregularity. An irregular digestive system can be caused or aggravated by changes in time zone, diet, and daily routines; stress; excitement; fatigue and having to use unfamiliar bathrooms.

Many who travel outside of North America fall victim to irregular digestion, especially when visiting developing countries such as Guatemala, Mexico or India. It can certainly put a damper on your vacation.

The logic behind taking probiotics before and during a trip is to populate your gut with "good bacteria". Shoring up the supply of healthy bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract will support your digestion.

TIPS TO MAINTAIN REGULARITY
WHILE TRAVELING:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Try and stick to your regular meal schedule.
  • Eat whole grains and thick-skinned fresh fruit and vegetables for fiber. Scrub them well before eating.
  • Make an effort to get some exercise every day, such as walking.
  • Try and "go" as soon as you get the urge.
  • Avoid excess alcohol.
  • Maintain a healthy balance of gut flora by taking a quality probiotic supplement before and while travelling.

ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR TRAVELING IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES:

Travelers occasionally get irregular bowels from eating and drinking foods and beverages that have no adverse effects on local residents. This is because the locals have developed a resistance from repeated exposure to foods that can wreak havoc on a newcomer's gastrointestinal system.

While it's hard to avoid these invisible annoyances - which can enter the food system anywhere from the time the food is grown to when the food or beverage is being served by a waiter that didn't wash his hands - there are some things you can do to help yourself:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before handling and eating food.
  • Drink only boiled, bottled or purified water. Avoid ice cubes - they may not be made from clean water. Some travel advisors go as far as to suggest you insist that bottled water be opened in front of you, to avoid unscrupulous kitchen staff from filling the bottle with tap water.
  • Don't brush your teeth with tap water.

  • Fruits or vegetables may have been grown or washed in contaminated water. Avoid eating raw vegetables, especially salads. Stick to thick-skinned fruit like bananas and oranges, and peel all fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid strawberries, raspberries and grapes, and all fresh fruit juice. We especially do not recommend melons, due to common contaminations.
  • Eat only at restaurants with a reputation for safety. Don't take your chances with street vendors.
  • Restaurant foods should be hot to the touch, and eaten promptly. Stay away from buffets.
  • Avoid dairy products, especially unpasteurized ones.
  • Don't eat raw or undercooked (rare) meat and fish.

TRAVELING WITH PROBIOTICS

Remember, a quality probiotic must be refrigerated in order for the good bacteria to remain alive and viable. When you're traveling, handle your probiotics as you would a fresh dairy product. Never put your probiotic product in your checked luggage, in case your baggage goes missing. Also, the cargo hold of an airplane can get extremely hot while the plane is on the runway.

Natren suggests that you:

  1. Wrap the bottle in several layers of aluminum foil and place in a sealable plastic bag to protect the probiotic bacteria against light and moisture.
  2. Place the wrapped bottle in an insulated bag (like a lunch bag) with a cold pack. We don't recommend using ice, as it's as important to keep the product dry as it is to keep it cool.
  3. Refrigerate it immediately upon arrival at your destination. If you do not have access to refrigeration keep your probiotic supplement in a cool dark place in a closet or near an air conditioner, and replenish the cold pack as needed.

WHAT IS THE BEST PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENT TO TAKE ON YOUR TRAVELS?

The 2007 meta-analysis of clinical trials of probiotics concluded "a mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum had significant efficacy".

Natren's most potent and popular probiotic supplement, HEALTHY TRINITY®, contains a minimum of 30 billion colony forming units (cfu) of three super strains of beneficial bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus.

The normal state of most bacteria, including L. acidophilus, B. bifidum and L. bulgaricus is antagonism and competition. The Trenev Process® ensures that each of the three beneficial super strains of live bacteria are micro-enrobed in a unique protective oil matrix, shielding them to ensure virtually 100% survivability for over an hour in the very corrosive stomach environment (confirmed through independent third party tested by an internationally acclaimed European institute).

Each HEALTHY TRINITY probiotic capsule provides a minimum of:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus NAS super strain, 5 billion cfu
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum Malyoth super strain, 20 billion cfu
  • Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus LB-51 super strain, 5 billion cfu

HEALTHY TRINITY probiotic capsules are recommended for adults and children over eight years of age to avoid possible choking hazards with younger children. You can simply open the HEALTHY TRINITY capsules and pour the probiotic into their food or drink for younger children, or give them Natren probiotic powders or chewable probiotics.
